kel tec su16 vs AK74 in california?
I recently learned it is indeed possible to get an AK rifle legally in california. it just needs to be modified first. so now I’m at stalemate- should I buy an Kel Tec SU16 (already california legal) or an AK74 (which will have the pistol grip cut off before entering the state)? Both costs roughly the same, both shoots similar rounds, one just needs a bit for work to get legally.
the kel tec su16b I found online for 450$. its compatible with AR15/M16 magazines. shoots .223. Action is like an AR15, which I’m not familiar with. I took a look at one in a local store, it feels crummy and flimsy.
The ak74 is a regular AK74 with the pistol grip cut off and a crappier grip installed. 5.45 is cheaper than .223, the ak74 is around 500$. plus the extra work and stuff, it might be 600 or 650$ total. I don’t know if there are 10 rd 5.45 magazines available. I favor the AK rifles, but I’m not sure if its worth the extra work and money.
so which should I get?
If it were me I’d go with the AK74 and see if you can get a decent thumbhole stock made for it.
There is a company in California called Ironwood Designs that makes great AK stocks for non-ban states. They might be able to turn out a really nice Cali compliant stock for you.
As for 10 round mags for AK74 I don’t know how available they are but someone must make them. Check Gunbroker.com
