Computer Understanding Technology

computer understanding technology
Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology? People already in the field please answer.?

Which one is better in the job market? If my understanding is correct an IT degree focuses more on the business side of technology where as CS is the programming side. I know that is a broad generalization but work with me.

Having worked in IT for 3 years I see most development work being offshored to India. So I am hesitent to get a CS degree. Seems like the safer IT jobs will be more on the business and management side vs the actual “grunt work”. What are your opinions on which degree would be more valuable in the future IT world?

I have a degree in computer engineering and regularly belittle ‘IT’ and even CompSci. However, academically speaking CompSci is as valid as Electrical Engineering.

IT is more focused on practical application of skills. There is a LOT of variation in the field of course — you could be doing anything from reinstalling Windows XP on clients’ PCs to designing a multinational redundant IPv6 network topology. You might also be a programmer, but you’ll be writing scripts or designing web applications.

CompSci graduates on the other hand, assuming they don’t stay in academia, will most likely become some kind of code monkeys, at least for a time. They will (can, at least) be writing far more complex applications than someone in IT would, but the range of work would be far greater.

As far as offshoring, everyone in India (i’m joking) majors in IT and that’s the kind of work that often gets outsourced the most. For example in my company, I work in a large software development organization and we use a lot of offshore people. However, they mostly do the grunt work, testing or grunt-type coding. The people on-shore do the design and complicated stuff. In fact, my particular group works on low-level firmware, and none of it is done off-shore at all.

So as usual, I’d tell you to get an engineering degree :) But beyond that, it depends on what you want to do. CompSci is a much more rigorous degree, and will be beneficial if you want to go farther into the realm of designing applications or more theoretical topics. But if you just want to do IT, then by all means get a degree in IT.

Bottom line: the degree is less important than your career aspirations. Anyone with any of these degrees can do anything from the lowest IT job that will eventually be automated, to being a cutting-edge researcher.
